I know it might sound goofy, but I think the idea of communicating with those who are very very young tells them we are taking them seriously. My wife has really enjoyed learning from this book ...

We found baby signing to be very useful. As soon as they start actually using the signs (or developing their own) their frustration level seems to drop ... and at some point speech does follow. I would also recommend "Baby Signs" by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn. It was a great resource.
